Today we deep-dive into four platforms:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jingdaily.com\/changing-content-china-douyin\/\">Douyin<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jingdaily.com\/why-is-kuaishou-better-than-douyin-for-e-commerce-conversion-social-engagement\/\">Kuaishou<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jingdaily.com\/the-growing-influence-of-little-red-book\/\">Little Red Book<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jingdaily.com\/targeting-chinas-generation-z-the-cool-kids-are-on-bilibili\/\">Bilibili<\/a>, in order to help you pick the right one for your brand in China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Douyin<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Douyin, as most of our readers might know, is a short video platform and the Chinese version of Tik Tok.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It integrates with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jingdaily.com\/luxury-brand-key-learnings-taobao-sales-strategy\/\">Taobao<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jingdaily.com\/jd-com-vs-tmall-chinas-luxury-e-commerce-battleground\/\">JD.com<\/a>, Kaola, Weipinhui, Suning, Yangmatou, and 163, enabling direct links from social to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jingdaily.com\/prada-dark-horse-china-e-commerce\/\">e-commerce<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/2eo55h24wdu6nyeph4frss2b76-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/niche_platforms_2_douyin_ux-1024x629.jpg\" alt=\"China\" class=\"wp-image-14161\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Although&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jingdaily.com\/what-brands-need-to-know-before-livestreaming-in-china\/\">live-streaming<\/a>&nbsp;on Douyin has been booming, we have previously documented that its focus remains on more affordable items.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/2eo55h24wdu6nyeph4frss2b76-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/4-ROI-sales-performance-Douyin-livestreaming-1.png\" alt=\"WalktheChat\" class=\"wp-image-14165\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2>Kuaishou<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/walkthechat.com\/why-is-kuaishou-better-than-douyin-for-e-commerce-conversion-social-engagement\/\">Kuaishou<\/a>&nbsp;is a short-video platform that is in many ways similar to Douyin when it comes to features, UX and e-commerce integration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like Douyin, Kuaishou enables sales through its proprietary e-commerce platform or by linking to a Taobao store.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/2eo55h24wdu6nyeph4frss2b76-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/niche_platforms_6_kuaishou_ux-1024x644.jpg\" alt=\"WalktheChat\" class=\"wp-image-14166\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2>Bilibili<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Bilibili is a platform that originated as a website for mangas. It is now a very active video platform. Bilibili still has a strong emphasis on mangas, but expanded way beyond this initial scope with a very strong&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jingdaily.com\/beauty-trends-in-the-time-of-social-distancing\/\">beauty<\/a>&nbsp;&amp;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jingdaily.com\/animal-testing-for-imported-cosmetics-whats-new-this-year\/\">cosmetics<\/a>&nbsp;vertical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/2eo55h24wdu6nyeph4frss2b76-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/niche_platforms_9_bilibili-1024x689.jpg\" alt=\"WalktheChat\" class=\"wp-image-14169\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2>Little Red Book<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Little Red Book started as a platform for users to share product and store information during their travels abroad. It expanded into a social e-commerce platform where users are reviewing products and looking for recommendations before making purchases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/2eo55h24wdu6nyeph4frss2b76-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/niche_platforms_11_red_ux-1024x620.jpg\" alt=\"China\" class=\"wp-image-14171\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2>Side-by-side comparison<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3>Active users<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In terms of Monthly Active Users (MAUs), Douyin and Kuaishou are clear outliers with respectively 518M and 443M MAUs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With 77M MAUs, Little Red Book is a much smaller, niche platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/2eo55h24wdu6nyeph4frss2b76-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/niche_platforms_1_mau-1-1024x737.png\" alt=\"China\" class=\"wp-image-14160\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Douyin and Kuaishou also benefit from much higher retention. 87% of new Douyin users still use the App after 7 days, against only 53% for Little Red Book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/2eo55h24wdu6nyeph4frss2b76-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/niche_platforms_14_user_retention-1024x742.png\" alt=\"WalktheChat\" class=\"wp-image-14174\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3>Users Gender<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The user base of Douyin used to be predominantly male, but it has quickly shifted to a more female base with the growth of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jingdaily.com\/wendy-yu-on-fashion-investing\/\">fashion<\/a>\/cosmetics&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jingdaily.com\/niche-influencer-categories-on-the-rise-in-china\/\">influencers<\/a>&nbsp;and Douyin live-streaming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/2eo55h24wdu6nyeph4frss2b76-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/niche_platforms_3_douyin_gender.png\" alt=\"WalktheChat\" class=\"wp-image-14162\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Kuaishou is more balanced in terms of genders, with male still making most of the user base (52%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/2eo55h24wdu6nyeph4frss2b76-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/niche_platforms_7_kuaishou_gender.png\" alt=\"WalktheChat\" class=\"wp-image-14167\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Little Red Book stands out by a mostly female user base: only 14% of Little Red Book users are males.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/2eo55h24wdu6nyeph4frss2b76-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/niche_platforms_12_red_gender.png\" alt=\"China\" class=\"wp-image-14172\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There is no recent data about gender distribution on Bilibili. The last reported figure by the company was 1.3:1 male to female ratio as of 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Users age<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Douyin users are also getting older. The proportion of users who are age below 30 has been decreasing from 48% to 40% of Douyin\u2019s user base between March 2019 and March 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/2eo55h24wdu6nyeph4frss2b76-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/niche_platforms_4_douyin_age-1024x728.png\" alt=\"China\" class=\"wp-image-14163\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Kuaishou users are even younger than Douyin users, with 53% of them below 30-years old (against \u201conly\u201d 40% for Douyin).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/2eo55h24wdu6nyeph4frss2b76-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/niche_platforms_8_kuaishou_age-1024x679.png\" alt=\"China\" class=\"wp-image-14168\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the platform with the youngest user base is by far Bilibili. The user base of Bilibili is exceptionally young, with over 81% of users below 24 years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/2eo55h24wdu6nyeph4frss2b76-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/niche_platforms_10_bilibili_age-1024x684.png\" alt=\"WalktheChat\" class=\"wp-image-14170\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Little Red Book also has a relatively young user base, more than 50% of users being younger than 30 years old (similar to Kuaishou).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/2eo55h24wdu6nyeph4frss2b76-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/niche_platforms_13_red_age-1024x674.png\" alt=\"China\" class=\"wp-image-14173\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3>Users spending power<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Surprisingly, despite its very young user base, Bilibili users are more willing to spend on the platform. Douyin comes second, with Kuaishou having users with the least spending power (possibly because of the fact that Kuaishou users tend to be located in smaller cities)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/2eo55h24wdu6nyeph4frss2b76-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/niche_platforms_15_spending_power-1-1024x759.png\" alt=\"China\" class=\"wp-image-14176\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Little Red Book has a well-educated user base, but suffers from very low conversion rates. As such, it is a good place good to spread the word about higher-priced items, but not a good platform to sell them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Product categories<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to their mass appeal, Douyin and Kuaishou are very spread out in terms of promotion categories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/2eo55h24wdu6nyeph4frss2b76-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/niche_platforms_16_douyin_kuaishou_categories-1024x670.png\" alt=\"China\" class=\"wp-image-14177\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Bilibili and Little Red Book both have strong cosmetics and fashion communities. Many brands choose to work with hundreds of micro-influencer on Bilibili and Little Red Book when launching a new product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bilibili is also strong in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jingdaily.com\/how-luxury-retail-can-become-a-tech-accelerator\/\">tech<\/a>&nbsp;and CGI accessory category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Summary<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As a summary, here are some rule of thumbs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Douyin<\/strong>&nbsp;is already a mass-market platform. Although it has a higher proportion of female users, it is a good cross-industry fit, especially for gifting to small Douyin \u201cmicro-influencers\u201d<\/li><li><strong>Kuaishou<\/strong>&nbsp;is also a cross-industry platform but suffers from a lower purchasing power than Douyin (its audience is younger and living in smaller cities). It is a good platform to promote commoditized or low-priced products<\/li><li><strong>Bilibili<\/strong>\u2018s user base is extremely young, yet has significant spending power. It can be a good fit for fashion and cosmetics brands. Its large male user-base also makes it a good fit for brands targeting men.<\/li><li><strong>Little Red Book<\/strong>&nbsp;is a smaller platform, but it is extremely strong in its niche: promoting beauty and fashion products to women (which make up the majority of its user base). Although users don\u2019t often buy products on the platform, it is perfect for gifting to small&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jingdaily.com\/should-chinese-idols-and-kols-try-to-help-fight-covid-19\/\">KOL<\/a>s.<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This post&nbsp;originally appeared on&nbsp;WalktheChat, our content partner.
